How to paste without formatting on a Mac

Press ⌥⇧⌘V (Paste and Match Style) instead of ⌘V. The text takes on the style of the place you paste into.

Paste and Match Style

  1. Copy the text as usual.
  2. Where you want it, press ⌥⇧⌘V, or choose Edit › Paste and Match Style.

Most Mac apps have it, including Mail, Pages, Notes and TextEdit. Some apps name it Paste as Plain Text or use another shortcut; look in the Edit menu.

Strip it first

  1. Paste into a plain-text place first, such as the Spotlight search field or a TextEdit document set to Format › Make Plain Text.
  2. Copy it again from there and paste it where you need it.

With dragand

In dragand's clipboard history, ⌥↵ copies the selected item as plain text, so it pastes without formatting with an ordinary ⌘V.
