How-to

How to move a file instead of copying it on a Mac

Hold ⌘ Command while you drag the file to the other disk; Finder moves it instead of copying it.

Command-drag to another disk

  1. Start dragging the file to a folder on the other disk.
  2. Hold ⌘ before you let go. The green + disappears from the pointer.
  3. Drop it. The file moves, and the original is no longer on the first disk.

On the same disk, a plain drag already moves the file.

Copy, then paste as a move

  1. Select the file and press ⌘C.
  2. Open the destination and press ⌥⌘V to move it there instead of pasting a copy.

With dragand

Drop a file on dragand's Keep zone and the file itself moves onto the shelf, with no timer, until you drag it out or put it back. Undo returns it to its folder.
