How-to

How to move files between apps on a Mac

Start dragging the file, keep holding, press ⌘Tab to switch to the app you want, then drop it into its window.

Switch apps in the middle of a drag

  1. Start dragging the file in Finder and keep the mouse button or trackpad held down.
  2. Press ⌘Tab and choose the app you want to drop into. Its window comes to the front.
  3. Drop the file into the window, for example a message, a document or an upload box.

Use the Dock

  1. Drag the file over the app's icon in the Dock and hold it there for a moment.
  2. The app comes to the front; move the file into its window and drop it.

Dropping the file straight on the app's icon opens it with that app instead.

With dragand

If the window you need isn't open yet, park the file first. Drag it to the right edge of your screen and drop it on dragand's shelf; open the app when you're ready and drag the file out from there.
